Key Features
-
📋 Studies show 1% kojic acid can reduce melanin index by 15-30% over 8-12 weeks. More effective when combined with other brightening agents (as in thisformula with vitamin C). Less irritating than hydroquinone but takes slightly longer to show results.
-
🍊 Fat-soluble form of vitamin C (ascorbic acid + palmitic acid) that penetrates lipid barriers more effectively than water-soluble forms. More stable than L-ascorbic acid. It works synergistically with kojic acid, vitamin C addresses oxidative stress and also inhibits tyrosinase through a different mechanism, while kojic acid chelates copper.
-
💧 Sea Buckthorn Oil contains over 190 bioactive compounds. Its Vitamin C content is 15x higher than oranges (supports brightening). It has Omega-7 a rare fatty acid that supports barrier repaircritical since brightening actives can compromise barrier.
-
⬇️ Paprika Extract contains capsaicinoids in very low, non-irritating concentrations.Creates mild warming sensation (thermogenic effect) that increases local circulation and enhances ingredient penetration without causing inflammation. Also rich in vitamin C and carotenoids.
-
Betaine from sugar beets, protects cells from osmotic stress and has anti-inflammatory properties. Helps prevent irritation from active ingredients. Also has some data suggesting it can inhibit melanin synthesis.

How do I use the product?
Important: Evening use only. Always follow with SPF 30+ during the day.
For Targeted Spot Treatment:
- Cleanse and pat skin completely dry.
- Apply 1-2 drops directly onto dark spots or areas of discoloration using your fingertip or a cotton swab.
- Gently tap (don't rub) the serum into the spot until absorbed.
- Wait 2-3 minutes before applying other products.
- Follow with your regular serum and moisturiser.
For All-Over Brightening:
- Cleanse and pat skin completely dry.
- Apply 3-4 drops to fingertips.
- Gently press and smooth over entire face, avoiding immediate eye area.
- Wait 2-3 minutes for absorption.
- Follow with moisturiser.
CRITICAL: Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30+ every morning. Kojic acid increases sun
sensitivity, and UV exposure will reverse brightening results.
Are there any contraindications to the product?
Do Not Use:
- During pregnancy or breastfeeding (limited safety data on topical
kojic acid during pregnancy; better to avoid) - On broken, wounded, or actively inflamed skin
- Immediately after aggressive chemical peels, laser, or microneedling
(wait 7-14 days) - If allergic to aspirin (theoretical cross-reactivity, though rare)
Use With Extreme Caution:
- On very sensitive or eczema-prone skin (patch test essential)
- If using prescription retinoids or acids (may cause excessive
irritation when combined) - On skin with active dermatitis or rosacea (wait until condition is
controlled)
Critical Sun Protection Requirement:
- MUST use SPF 30+ daily. Kojic acid increases photosensitivity
significantly - UV exposure during treatment will worsen hyperpigmentation and reverse
all progress - Clients who cannot commit to daily SPF should not use this product
How is this different from vitamin C serums for brightening?
Vitamin C and kojic acid work through different mechanisms vitamin C is an antioxidant that prevents new damage and gently brightens, while kojic acid actively inhibits the enzyme that creates pigmentation. Think of vitamin C as prevention and overall glow, while kojic acid is targeted treatment for existing spots. Many people use both vitamin C in the morning,
kojic acid at night for comprehensive brightening.
Can I use this on my body for dark spots on my hands or chest?
Absolutely! This serum works beautifully on sun spots on hands, chest, shoulders, or any area with hyperpigmentation. Just remember that anywhere you apply it becomes more sun-sensitive, so SPF on those areas is essential too.
Will this lighten my natural skin tone?
No, kojic acid targets excess melanin in
hyperpigmented areas (dark spots) but doesn't lighten your natural, even skin
tone. It works by inhibiting overactive melanin production in specific spots,
bringing those areas back to match your normal skin tone. The goal is evenness,
not overall lightening.
Why do I have to use this only at night?
Kojic acid makes your skin more sensitive to UV light, and sun exposure during the day would not only irritate your skin but actually darken your spots, completely counterproductive! Evening application allows it to work overnight, and then you protect that work with SPF during the day.
What if I forget to apply SPF one day while using this?
Even one day of unprotected sun exposure can trigger new pigmentation or darken existing spots, basically undoing weeks of progress. If you know you'll have a day without reliable SPF (beach day, outdoor event), skip the serum the night before to reduce photosensitivity. Consistent SPF is truly the make-or-break factor for this treatment's success.
I have melasma, will this help?
Kojic acid can be helpful for melasma, but melasma is notoriously stubborn and usually requires a multi-faceted approach. This serum can be part of your treatment plan, but you may also need professional treatments and should definitely work with a dermatologist. The hormonal component of melasma means it can return if triggers aren't addressed. Consider this a maintenance tool rather than a cure.
Can I use this if I'm pregnant?
We recommend avoiding kojic acid during pregnancy and breastfeeding. While there's no definitive evidence of harm, there's also not enough safety data to confirm it's risk-free. During pregnancy, focus on gentle brightening ingredients. Your dark spots will still be there after pregnancy, and this serum will be here waiting!
My spots look darker after a few days of use, is that normal?
This is actually not normal and likely means one of two things:
- You're not using enough SPF and getting sun exposure, which darkens spots during active treatment, or
- You're experiencing irritation that's triggering inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Stop use immediately, let your skin calm down with gentle care, and then restart more slowly (3x per week). If it continues, this product may not be right for your skin.
Can I use this with my prescription retinoid?
You can use both, but not at the same time. Use your retinoid and kojic acid on alternating nights, or if your skin tolerates it well, retinoid in the evening and this in the morning (followed by SPF).
However, using both together in the same application may cause significant irritation. Listen to your skin if you experience redness, peeling, or discomfort, space them out more.
I'm not seeing results after 3 weeks, should I use more?
Three weeks is still early, most people start
seeing visible fading around 6-8 weeks.
Using more product won't speed results;
consistency and patience are what matter. Make sure you're being diligent with
SPF (this is usually the issue when results are slow).
Take a "before" photo now so you can compare at the 8-week mark, changes can
be subtle day-to-day but dramatic over time. If you truly see no change by 12 weeks, we should reassess, but give it the full cycle first.
